🎤 Backyard Brothers: Building Outdoor Dreams in the Texas Hill Country

An Interview with Warren Byington

What makes your approach to pools and outdoor spaces different from other companies in Central Texas?

Warren: It might sound cliché, but we really do care about our clients. Like, genuinely. We take the time to listen to what they want—even if they don’t quite know how to articulate it yet. We do traditional work, sure, but we live for the unique!

What does the Texas Hill Country lifestyle mean to you, and how does it influence your design philosophy?

Warren: I moved here almost a decade ago, and I’ve never felt more at home anywhere. The people are kind, the communities are tight-knit, and there’s this deep appreciation for nature and beauty. It’s more than a place—it’s a way of life. That love shows up in every project we do.

Are there unique challenges—or creative opportunities—when building outdoor spaces in this region?

Warren: You’ve got to consider things like drought conditions, water conservation, rural infrastructure...

There’s so much creative freedom out here, especially on larger, rural properties. You can really dream big.

Do you source any materials locally or work with other Hill Country businesses?

Warren: We do whenever we can. Over the years, we’ve built some great relationships with other local business owners, and that’s a huge part of why we love working here. Supporting each other just makes sense.

We’ve seen a trend toward full outdoor experiences—kitchens, fire pits, entertainment zones. What’s hot right now in outdoor living?

Warren: Multi-use spaces are huge right now—like swim-up bars, sunken lounges, and even outdoor theaters. In the Hill Country, we’re also seeing a push for sustainability—solar power, native plants, rainwater collection. Beauty with purpose.

What are some of the most memorable or over-the-top projects you’ve worked on?

Warren: I’m definitely biased here—but it’s my own property. We customized every inch for my family. The pool is so unique. We've got ziplines, swings, goat pens, a hobby farm... It’s a true reflection of how personalized our work can be, especially for families. This is an earlier photo of my pool; it has fountains off to the left and will soon have a waterslide as well:

Any advice for someone dreaming of their perfect backyard but unsure where to start?

Warren: Start small. Sketch your ideas, save inspiration photos, walk your property. And when you’re ready to build—hire the best.

My dog Lyla seems to think our spa is among the best!

Backyard Brothers implies a close-knit vibe. What’s your team culture like, and how do you maintain it as you grow?

Warren: We run lean, and we give our people a lot of autonomy. This isn’t a top-down kind of business—it’s collaborative, mission-driven, and full of trust. That said, it’s not for everyone. We expect excellence, and we work hard. But we do it together.

Describe your perfect day in the Texas Hill Country—no work, just enjoying what this region has to offer.

Warren: Easy—my whole family by the creek or river, just swimming and relaxing. Maybe stop by some antique shops. We’re also weirdly obsessed with health food stores, juice bars, and anything organic or local. That’s our thing.

Favorite Hill Country BBQ, brewery, or secret swimming hole?

Warren: My own backyard! It’s hard to beat. We don’t do breweries much—we’re a kombucha-and-clean-eating crew. Non-GMO at minimum, organic and local whenever possible. We love Sovereignty Ranch; my kids are always asking to go there.

If you could build a dream backyard for any local celebrity or Texas legend, who would it be—and what would it include?

Warren: George Strait. I imagine building him an epic waterslide for the grandkids—and maybe a performance stage right next to his pool. Just in case he wants to sing under the stars. As he's sung, I'll be somewhere down in Texas, if you're needing me....
